  Dave,

The item type 4- is for 'Kits' dont ask. item type '1' is Inventoried
and you must have an Item bal record to open a PO, only 1 per PO. item
type 2, or 3 ( are treated the same) are non-inv. and you donot require
an item bal record. you may have several on a PO, purch assigns a 'seq' #
that must be ref. during receipt.
If a bal record exist then Inv. is updated. (tool room ?)
Also, during receipt if no item bal, there is no Purch U/M .vs. Stk
U/M.
OK now, a/p wise, be careful of using too generic
an MRO item number for your non-inv. mapics does not display the ext desc
for a/p 3-way matching. and its harder to pre - assign a g/l number.
i like to have the part number be clear enough to facilitate receiving
and a/p entry.
hope this helps,
If you would like email me direct for more info
