Environment: Mapics DB/Y2K (Mod 4), with IM, PC&C & PDM; Uncontrolled
Warehouses

Hi Mapics ML:

Before deciding to submit this question, I looked thru the Mapics ML Archives
and interestingly, the only result was from an email I wrote the Mapics ML back
in October 2000. I reread the responders (two of them) and I came to the
conclusion that the question deserves another take by the ML....so here goes.

Warehouse stock location ( WHSLC ) usage in IM
Warehouse Stock Location - what is the field in the Item Master used for?

The Warehouse Stock Location (WHSLC) in the Item Master file (ITEMASA) is used
as a reference only.

If you first create an Item Master record and populate the field Warehouse
Stock Location, the STOCK LOC field in the Item Balance record will be
automatically populated when you create an Item Balance (ITEMBL) record for the
item.

In a controlled warehouse, WHSLC in ITEMBL is used as default location (if IM
is tailored to use default locations), when location is left blank during
inventory transaction entry. Also, in ITEMBL maintenance for an item in a
controlled warehouse, WHSLC is edited against the SLDATA file, and WAM3028 NEW
DEFAULT STOCKING LOCATION NOT VALID is displayed if the location specified has
not been defined for that warehouse. Stocking locations can be defined via IM
File Maintenance, Location Control, Location Detail.

Shop packet material pick lists can be printed in WHSLC sequence, whether the
warehouse is controlled or uncontrolled.

------End of Mapics Support on this subject------

What would happen if the WHSLC field in the ITEMASA was not populated at all?
Would this have any effect on Mapics activities and reports as long as the
WHSLC in the ITEMBL was set properly?

We expend a certain amount of time resolving Mapics error messages which advise
us that codes such as Item Class and Warehouse Stock Location are "not" the
same in certain Master Files. Is this all really necessary?

I look forward to your responses as you revisit this matter.

Have a nice weekend.
