Keith -

When our old check signing machine started "eating" checks and had to be
retired / dumped, we just got rubber stamp signature and hand stamp them
(our volume is about the same as yours). Nice low-tech way, and it really
doesn't take our AP clerk much longer to hand-stamp than it did to run the
checks through the old machine. The rubber stamps are locked in our
Accounting Manager's file cabinet, so the AP clerk can't get them without
his knowing it, i.e. checks-and-balances. BTW, checks over a certain amount
have to be hand-signed by two officers, so that cuts down the number of
"stamped" checks even further.

We have an old check signing machine that I am looking
at updating just due to age. I do not print a large
amount of checks each week (about 300-400). We print
the checks on a preprinted stock on a dot matrix
printer connected to the AS400 and sign on a manual
machine. It is this manual machine that needs
replaced. I am just curious what others are using and
would recommend for replacement of our current signer.
I would like to replace replace as little equipment
as possible and keep my current check stock.

Thanks,
Keith
