Steve,

This generic question comes up on the various ERP message boards periodically
and I hope my colleagues on this board will agree with me that you should
cautiously rethink your choice to change every instance of an Item #
throughout the entire database. From a purely database perspective it is a
complex, but achievable task. However, will you also go to all your paper
files and change purchase orders, sales orders, work orders, invoices,
shipping and receiving logs, and engineering files to keep them in sync with
the changes made to the database? Will this create any auditing difficulties?

I recommend that you create your new item #, then do a mass replace if it
appears in product structures. Modify open Sales Orders, Work Orders, and
Purchase Orders that have the old part using the standard MAPICS methods.
