I agree with Eric. The ALF fees we pay today (annually) are more than it used to cost to BUY (license) all of MAPICS a few years ago. There's no question that the ALF fees are funding development of new client server modules that you can not benefit from, without licensing new modules and incurring additional MAPICS and hardware costs. -----Original Message----- From: Dave Shaw [mailto:daveshaw@bellsouth.net] Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2001 12:30 PM To: mapICS-L@midrange.com Subject: MAPICS Green Screen Support & Power Architecture Forwarded by moderator on behalf of Eric Wolf (eric_a_wolf@hotmail.com): -------------------------------------------------- Steve, While I believe it is appropriate and necessary to keep the system up-to-date technology-wise, I am concerned that the use of annual license fees are being primarily committed to newer applications. When MAPICS announces these enhancements to the Client Architecture, for example, the customer's who paid for that development, cannot have the application unless they pay handsomely for it. Isn't the annual licence fee actually an "Annual Maintenance, Support and Use" fee? Why then, do the customers who already have MAPICS have to pay for these "upgrades", when they should be included as a PTF to their existing applications? Keep in mind, MAPICS Client Architecture applications CANNOT exist without the original base modules. In addition, due to some design performance issues, customers may be required to upgrade their AS/400 (i-Series) which incurs a MAPICS upgrade charge. All you receive is a license key - nothing else. You may see more customers buying seperate machines to just to run their ERP system and bridging to the larger machine for other functions (email, Lotus, Web, etc.). Isn't this a step backward in technology? Eric A.
