If you need an EDI solution, but don't/can't justify the BIGEDI
implementation,
I would recommend using a Service Bureau via the internet.

We use: http://www.esisinc.com/

Have been using them for almost 5 years!!! They essentially do all the
work, establish partners, create/manage the transaction sets. They even
have bar coding stuff (haven't used their bar coding, ours are all RPG
custom)
But I can't say enough good about how their service has helped us meet the
EDI trend and in servicing our customers.

We are setup with Boeing, GEAC, Cessna, Sikorsky....etc. So its aerospace
'approved'!!

We used to have Premenos, but flat out dumped it for the ease of ESIS HOM
system. Spent over $40K and threw it out without regrets!

The best thing I can say is that IS has not dealt with EDI for over 4
years,
sales handles it ALL!!! Used to be a daily hassle for IS. That's not to
say
using a transaction software (EC) & VAN hasn't improved since then, but
for many MAPICS shops (and others!!!) this REALLY makes sense!

Paul ---- If you really only have one trading partner you may want to
consider using a third party service to do the EDI transactions for you.
Last year we got a contract with Sears and had to use EDI for all business
documents starting immediately. Sears has a very strict EDI testing
program and while we were getting things set up and tested we used Clark
International Corp to do the EDI with Sears. They take in electronic
documents from the partner and change them to paper which get faxed to you.
You fax paper documents to Clark and they change them into EDI. Clark is
already approved for many of the major trading partners. The cost is no
more than VAN charges.

We installed EC and Premenos about 4 years ago. It works fine but would
be difficult to use in shops that have no programming resources. To get
the desired results user exit programs are needed. I would not attempt to
install and use EC without attending the training class from MAPICS (Custom
Systems Corp).

Subject: EDI Requirements

Our company has a requirement to setup an EDI interface to one (or more) of
our customers. I have been exploring some of the Mapics documentation on
their EC product, as well as discussing the requierements with our local
Mapics affiliate. It looks like we have a number of options and I wanted
to
know what are some of the more successful EDI implementations out there.
What solutions did you use for the mapping, translation, network, etc?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Paul
