Paul,

Out of curiosity, what software package did you go with?

My company just went through all of the searching for harware/software and
we made a decision to use an other package(not MAPICS). The software and
the hardware together (upgrade from Model 300 to a Model 720) was still less
than the package that our MAPICS dealer was giving us. Our conversion has
been done(CISC to RISC)and it was painless. The company we bought the 400
from sent one of their guys to help with that. The new software has a very
"MAPICSY" feel to it and it was $50,000 less expensive.

The thing you have to decide is what are you
going to do in the future if you need to upgrade your AS/400? Since IBM
will not be supporting a CICS machines, you will still need to upgrade to a
RISC box someday.

Even if another ERP system is similar, it is
NOT MAPICS. Your users will have to learn a new system, you will have to
convert your existing data to the new system (may the force be with you on
that one), and when you need to upgrade to a different AS/400 you will be
forced into RISC anyway.

So I guess what I am getting at is, why not
just upgrade to a RISC box now and covert to XA. I would be surprised if
you could purchase new software & implement it for less money than upgrading
your current software/hardware.

                                Hi Mapics ML:

My employer has an interesting situation to
ponder and I thought I would request some feedback from the ML members
because you may have been though a similar situation before.

We've been a Mapics DB (Y2K, Mod 4) user for
many years on a CISC version of the AS/400. If we upgrade to Mapics XA, we
have to replace our hardware with RISC type because EA doesn't support CISC.

We have been looking at other ERP software
such as HarrisData because it will run on our existing hardware and it
appears to be similar to Mapics.

The other consideration is that apparantly
IBM won't be offering any upgrades or support for our old CISC machine in
the future.

My employer is trying to make the best
decision given the economic restraints it has to operate in. If money were
no object, we would probably upgrade to XA and get the new hardware but this
is the real world that we are dealing in and the decision has to be analyzed
from all points of view.

Please comment on this situation so that I
can offer my employer some of your suggestions on this matter.
