I fought with Grub too when I went to 64 bit. Eventually dumped it and
installed lilo. It looks a lot nicer than it did a few years ago, and
it's fine with 64 bit.

I use slackware, btw. I guess that's sort of like stick shift vs
automatic trans, but it works well for me, and I can usually fix it if
something goes wrong.
