I would strongly suggest not even thinking of building a distribution - too much hassle, too little benefit. It is much better to just supply another software repository to an existing distribution (personally I use 9.04 as vmware player is supported) and then just tell people the few steps needed to add the software repository, and the "pull everything in"-package name. The mechanism is described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-applications/C/extra-repositories-adding.html

A good long term goal would be to get the packages created in the main Debian repository.
