This is less and less of a practice from what I hear. I believe that ATI
offers linux drivers for their new cards, I'll have to double check with
the guy that told me that... or look it up, whichever is quicker :)

I've seen of late is the lack of device drivers for linux....
At least one person agrees with me :)
Especially true for "high powered" graphics cards. Because the VENDOR
refused to release the information so that others could write a driver and
also refuses to write the driver themselves. For my simple needs, I've not
plugged in anything which ended up not working. But I also do my diligence
to find out Linux-friendly hardware too.
