Anyway, I recalled that I had an old computer with x5250 installed, so I used `ssh -X` to log in then run `x5250 mysystem`. I get an otherwise blank screen that has:

If I add a t to run xt5250 instead, it works fine.

Not a really big deal; I'm mostly just curious. But it would be nice to be able to install the software on one server instead of having to tweak all of my settings on every computer I use.

I have this happen to me on very rare occasions. That screen is what x5250 puts up before connecting to the host. Once that connection is established the screen is redrawn with whatever the host sends (usually nothing for a bit until the sign on screen appears, that's why it is all black). Do you consistently get only this screen? Does starting x5250 again give the same result?

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
