Instead of scripting TN5250, you might try using TCL on the iSeries itself. You'd need to install "iSeries Tools For Developers", PRPQ 5799-PTL and then you'd need to install TCL for aix 5.1 from UCLA's aixpdsoftware library.

The tools provide some basic unix tools including an shell, window manager, X server and VNC server. It also provides standard character mode xterm. It amazes some people when they see a graphical desktop that's running on an iSeries. I'm going to try to get TN5250 running on the iSeries soon, since IBM doesn't provide a way to do that from X.
