Just curious why this project exists when IBM has a very good 5250 emulator for Linux and TN5250J runs on any Java VM.

The reason for writing free software is not because there is no equivalent, but rather to give the freedoms that accompany free software. Please see the following for reasons why free software is developed:

Tn5250j is an excellent free software project. However, not everyone wants to run java. Also, this project existed before tn5250j - tn5250j even had its beginnings as an offshoot of this project!

On a personal note, I work on this project because I can make a difference. And I can make things work the way I like - I am not subject to how IBM thinks things should work. iSeries Access doesn't work on every unix-like machine but tn5250 does. iSeries Access doesn't do all the things that I would like, but x5250 does most of them. But most of all, tn5250 (and tn5250j) gives me rights to the software that iSeries Access doesn't.

It's not the software that's free; it's you.
