Well, great, it seems I'm getting more than I ever expected! :)

Absolutely. And while this is a great advantage for a workstation user,
it's very annoying if you want to set up a single central printer in a site
where you only have w32.
I am lucky since the '400 is in the same site as the linux machines, so a
print job sent to PRTPDF would only send PDFs over the WAN, but the basic
idea is: if the original program has been conceived as a daemon, why must
the w32 port run as a session-bound application?

...like diving in a pool. In winter. In Trondheim. When the pool is empty
for maintenance.

but the question was: can I do it entirely in w32 with (L)GPL software only?
more some kind of proof of concept than a real need, but it seems rather
complex (seems like the pdf conversion part should be taken into the
lp5250d binary or whatsoever, just to avoid smashing my head in the
aforementioned pool pavement).

how nice of you ;)

You're right. Taking a third look at the printout I've seen that I
hadn't *cough cough* the right idea on how the printout should look...

Anyway, thank you. I'll spend some time in the weekend on fooling around
with papersizes and friends. Wish me luck. :)

[btw: Luca (who knows my problems even better than me - I'm not joking) has
mistakenly replied to the list instead than directly. For the sake of
knowledge, he was telling he's happily using lp5250d + scs2pdf on a debian
machine and sends the printouts via mail or on disk using a simple script,
and that he's got 8 geographically distributed iSeries and the thing works
very smoothly]

thank you all
