Yes, PDF can do that.  Some of my early PDFs had text all smashed on top
of each other.  I've applied the patch that Frank Richter sent to my tree.
I'm looking for a way to do what is supposed to happen: make something
bold.  So far I'm having no luck making any PDFs that change fonts.
