well your 'generic' is probably better than my specific knowledge.  I use
the (S)ystem (A)dministraton (M)odule on the HPUX to add my linux printer as
a  remote printer to my linux IP, and have it configure as lp0 on the Linux
box, you'd think that all that remains is to direct print to the remote
printer from HP to Linux.  But as far as 'setting up' lpd beyond that, or
manual edits to /etc/printcap, I haven't tried or checked, however I will
look at that tomorrow morning...
