Applications ported from S/36 land or written by old-timers might not expect F1. M-h is Meta-H (Alt-H on modern keyboards, although it might soon mean Apple-H for me ;-), which on some kinds of terminals sends Esc-H - that is where the confusion lies (I'm assuming - I didn't write the man pages).
