The tab issue occurs when there are no fields on the display to tab between
and is not related to rxvt vs. xterm. The emulator makes use of xterm-specific
escapes to do things like resize the window when you enter 132 column mode,
as well as the terminal type and the Xdefaults are set up to do keyboard
mapping only for a real xterm.

It should run fine in an rxvt, but there will be missing functionality.

See the answer to your next question :)

To set up a terminfo entry, do the following as root:

tic 5250.terminfo

... that compiles the entry and puts it in the proper place. To use the
termcap entry instead, append the 5250.termcap to the end of your /etc/termcap
file. The terminfo is recommended, as it supports more information and loads
faster.

You'll also have to set up your ~/.Xdefaults file, information on how to do
that (among other things) is available in the README file in the distribution.
There is also an operating-system specific readme in the appropriate directory
int the distribution.

Can't help you there.
