The bottom line is, does it work if you go in thru SSH? In that case, it's

Actually, it goes to a password entry line. And then rejects the
password entered. Which seems to fit with what happens if a keystore
with a non-default password is used in Tomcat, and the password is
specified in a keyPass clause, given that it produces the same error
message.
