... that's neither JDBCR4 nor Java!!! that's SQL - a "bad query" doesn't cause an exception at the level above SQL; it terminates normal and gives back a SQLSTATE and a vendor specific SQLCODE. When a "bad query" causes a problem with JDBCR4, as described in another thread, that's neither Java nor SQL too, that's JDBCR4 and RPG JNI support, they have obviously a problem with java RuntimeExceptions like NullPointer and ArrayIndexOutOfBounds.
