To change globally or just for your own instance? I use a .profile in my home directory to set my environment JAVA_HOME and SystemDefault.properties as well. I think the location of SystemDefault.properties and the system environment variables are used.

With application launching, I use set all the properties for the job in a CL when I start the application.
