I'm setting the options to include: -Djava.version=1.5

Does that help?

It should.

You may want to print out the properties from System.getProperties() one by one in order to be certain that you are running with Java 1.5

You may also want to explicitly compile for Java 1.4 so you are certain that an older runtime cannot run your application.
