Richard,
First of all, Glassfish is a full JEE application server as opposed to
Tomcat which is "just" a servlet container. Servlet containers are fine
for stand-alone single-WAR deployments, but unfortunately Tomcat is no
longer the reference implementation so it is a bit behind.
My purpose is, however, to get access to the Java EE 6 _Web Profile_ which
Tomcat does not yet support, which in turn is driven primarily by the
advantages in the Expression Language powering JSP's and Facelets which I've
used extensively for upgrading an existing web application, and the
productivity gains from previous versions cannot be overstated. Secondly we
really want to get into CDI, and JEE 6 provides this out of the box. We
want to stay as close to the reference implementations as possible to ensure
the least amount of pain in the long term when doing maintenance. Right now
Java EE 6 Web Profile is the sweet spot for us.
All this new software simply does not run well under Tomcat, yet. Perhaps
with Tomcat 7, but for now that is beta and Glassfish has had its first
maintenance release and has proven to be very nice to work with under
Windows and in production on Linux and Windows.
I hope that in due time more implementations of the Java EE 6 web profile
will be available (Resin seems to be a good candidate for the next one) and
at that time we might switch implementations based on actual needs but for
now Glassfish is what I would like.
Hopefully this clears it up a bit
/Thorbjørn

Just curious.
What do you see are the benefits of Glassfish over something like Tomcat
?
