Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Malformed \uxxxx encoding.
Sounds like we are here:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/util/Properties.html#load(java.io.InputStream)

The input stream must be in ISO-8859-1 and there must be four hexadecimal digits after \u. Check that the ccsid on the log4j.property file is 819.

Would your log4j.properties file contain non-ASCII characters encoded by a tool to \u-sequences?
