"Backward compatible" usually means the other way, but if your question
is, say, can a class compiled under JDK 1.4 run under 1.5? The answer is
yes. Up until 1.5, the answer was pretty much the same in reverse, but you
will get an exception trying to run a class compiled with 1.5 or JSE 6.0
under, say, 1.4.
