Hi Brian,

Well, there have always been good reasons to run your app/web server on
a separate box, even if you were using WebSphere.

That's interesting; I would have thought you would get better performance if the appserver and the database are as close to one another as possible. Does this just have to do with machine sizing?

On the upside for the '400, on my current project ( Glassfish running
against AS/400 database, ) I'm using some of the SQL 2003 capabilitiess DB2
supports, as well as UTF-8 in anticipation of some other languages coming
in.

My current long term plan is to replace our single i (a 525) with a pair of smaller i's configured for high availability, when our lease is up. I would then run Glassfish on Linux againt DB2 on these i's. We'll see if the plan still has traction a few years down the road.

The project involves product costing against bills of material with effective date prices, UOM conversions, and a slew of challenges, but fun. Even better, the client was using Access and Excel, and now they're getting revved about Java and the AS/400. Not to mention that they will have a coherent pricing model...

Java on the i is great. I just wish IBM had a pricing model that favored Java development in smaller shops. The price of IBM portal for instance is completely beyond our reach.

So, do you do the scientific stuff on the AS/400 as well, or is that on
other boxes/languages?

We do the administration of our research site on the i. Things like accounting, hr, purchasing, etc. We also deal with the management of our scientific program in terms of shceduling/co-odinating the facility. This gets a little fun with a world-wide user base. All scientific analysis is done using Linux machines, and their's some older VMS machines on site that still run the cyclotron itself.

If this gets boring to others on list, we can move elsewhere or quit.

Nothing wrong with a little community building is there? :P
