JZOS bundles a nice interface with the "Job Entry System" so that it is
easy to write standard print reports and other things. It also allows
allocation of datasets via JCL DD statements (not an "i" concept as far
as I can tell) and reading them easily. The way to run Java on z/OS
without JZOS requires using z/OS UNIX (PASE equivalent) services which
don't easily allow reading and writing SPOOL files or specifying the
dataset names in standard JCL DD statements.

My first question, when I read your original append, was why can't you use JES to run Java in batch?

Does the JVM for ZOS always run in PASE (equivalent)? Is there no "native" JVM?

I presume JZOS provides a bunch of Java classes that provide a means to interact with "native" ZOS stuff?

Once again, the "i" is better integrated. I'm really impressed with the
system from what I've read (we don't have one yet).

I felt the same way after my first System/38 course. IBM Guided Learning Centre. Took me through single-level store, object-based architecture, high-level-machine, database, CL, DDS, etc. I came away thinking Wow! Neat machine. Why aren't all computers designed so well. I couldn't wait for our system to arrive. Still feel that way-- especially when I have to work on other boxes.

Simon Coulter.
