Evidently.

Could it perhaps be that some spawned-off thread is hanging? That the exceptions I get with the trace turned on might have something to do with the problem?

If I add a "System.exit(0)" call at the end, the program terminates, of course, but I feel like that amounts to trying to thread a needle with a sledgehammer.
