I guess I understood James' point, because I'm completely the other end of
the spectrum, a self-taught programmer who had two embedded operating
systems in production by the age of 21 and went on to manage the
architecture of the world's largest AS/400 software company.

I really do think he was pointing to the "puppy mill" CS degrees that don't
teach anything as opposed to the reality of working with real systems,
whether it's in a good curriculum in school or in the school of hard knocks.
