    You might also be a little more specific in your query.  Since Java runs
on the AS/400, your front-end and back-end might be both Java and AS/400.
And, are you talking web app or standalone?

    I presume you mean a web app running under a Java serve on some other
platform and using the AS/400 as a resource.  I always try to look to
strengths, and my short, top answers for AS/400 strengths are database and
security.

    You'll find many fans of stored procedures, but, in general, I'm not one
of them.  It's a great way to make your app non-portable, due to proprietary
SP implementations.  OTOH, it will keep you in work if you ever want or need
to change or run on different databases.
