I have seen several translations between computer languajes, as a mather of fact, the compiler does a very good translation from source to "intermediate code" to machine languaje. There is a "NetRexx" that will compile Rexx into java clases instead of to machine languaje, so I imagine it should be posible to compile RPG to java clases, without doing java source. Quality? A salesman asures me that "Genexus" can import a system writen in RPG and produce all the documentation plus the posibility to generate the same (or upgraded) system in any languaje. Real?

I agree, there are a lot of differences. Has anybody ever heard about
Caravel TransTools? This claims to be a conversion tool. I have looked at
some sample code and it is 'java' in a word but not really. You cannot take
the converted .java source file and compile it with your normal sdk on your
desktop(even after supplying all the required libraries, .jars, etc, etc..).
You have to do it in their 'framework' which is configured to work with
iSeries commands and other such intricate stuff. I was told that it is a
very steep learning curve to get used to that framework. Is that right?
Please feel free to throw any kind of advice. I am all ears at this end...

cheers,

Jake.

We have been looking at products which converts RPG to Java. Has anybody
done that? If so, what are the pro's and con's? Any input in this matter
would be highly appreciated.
There are tools that do that ... but personally, I would be very leary
of any tool that claims to be able to convert with a high degree of
accuracy ... the language paradigm differences between RPG & Java are
just so huge.
