Well...since that's my code, I guess I should raise my hand to help. :)

I *think* it's blowing up on this:

   if (description.compareTo("A") == 0)    // Use label function

where I'm determining if the description passed is character. It may be
unrelated, but I've seen a problem where the description of fields were not
in the order specified in the file description. I don't know if that's the
problem or not.

Do this: send me your /tmp/input.txt file. Maybe I can see the problem
there.
