Thanks to all for their responses, and pointers to the well-known SAV-program, but which apparently only can save to a traditional save file (I was hoping to be able to store in the IFS).

The above paper was very interesting, as it contains information unknown to me (I have mostly just read the infocenter docs), and as Java 1.4.2 was installed within the last weeks it should be at the latest patch level. (Eclipse reports them to be classic JVM's though, when attaching a debugger, but there may be several reasons for that).

It would make sense if the performance I see is due to a insufficient memory pool, and that it may be remedied by activating the verification cache on that machine. I'll report back my findings for the archive.
