You can also use the command WRKENVVAR from the iSeries command line and it will list all the environment variables defined for your job. If you prompt that command you can switch it to show the system (*SYS) level environment variables. If you go into QSHELL with command QSH, and type in export and press Enter, it will show you a list of environment variables. These is where I seen two entries, one labeled classpath (lowercase) and one labeled CLASSPATH (uppercase). That is how I discovered my problem.
