Hmm,I have a feeling I'm going to have to override the equals method in the BulkGarbageDetail class to make this work from what I've read.
Depends on what you need.From the JavaDoc: "the index of the first occurrence of the argument in this vector, that is, the smallest value k such that elem.equals(elementData[k]) is true; returns |-1| if the object is not found."
If not overridden, equals is the one found on Object, which test if it is the same object (the references are the same). This will work fine if the two lists contains the same physical objects.
If not, then you need to override equals such that it gives true if two different objects are the same BulkGarbageDetail class.
A common pattern here is something like (untested code): public boolean equals(Object o) { if (o instanceof BulkGarbageDetail == false) { return false; } BulkGarbageDetail that = (BulkGarbageDetail) o; if (this.field1.equals(that.field1) == false) { return false; } // etc...return true; }
Note also that you do not need the typecast inside the indexof since it takes an object.
