It's called a CAPCHA if I'm not mistaken. I have no idea how to make them but 
hopefully that will assist your search.

Has anybody ever used a graphic generator to create an alpha-numeric graphic 
that the user must read and enter?

I see them on the web and want to add one to a site but don't have an example 
and don't know what it is called.

I want a version that works in Java.
