Hi Paul,

I started out with WDSc 5.1.2 and was un-successful off the get go
(concerning the JSF and getting Tomcat to work). At the time I was doing
some side work with a team for JSF non-iSeries solution and it wasn't an
option to buy them the WDSc because it was so high priced. So I began
hunting and stumbled across MyEclipseIDE.

To put it short, I have loved it from the start (been using it for about 8
months). It had the base tooling I needed (JSP, JSF, Hibernate, J2EE
deployment/projects) to get off the ground right away. The next version of
MyEclipseIDE has me very excited because they are making big strides towards
a more full featured Java environment (web services, GUI faces config
editor, remote deployment, UML, etc).

My intention is to go back to WDSc (now that I know JSF) and see what I am
missing out on because I do believe that IBM has done some good work and it
was the tooling was just overwhelming at the time. Now if they could just
get a better pricing model so it wasn't limited to larger businesses. When I
saw the retail price of WRAD 6.0 @ $8000 I almost soiled myself. I thought
for sure that must come with a nice decked out desktop or something :-)
When I saw the $29.95 yearly price tag of MyEclipseIDE it was a no-brainer.

I do get weird debugger errors every now and then with MyEclipseIDE, but a
quick 20 second app restart fixes that, and it only happens about once a
week. I haven't submitted a bug report so I really can't complain.

Tomcat 5.5.9 in MyEclipseIDE starts in 12 to 18 seconds with a 100 page web
app. THAT'S FAST!

Hot code replace with Tomcat works pretty good once you get used to it.

Haven't had a crash of Eclipse 3.0 coupled with MyEclipseIDE yet!

All in all I think IBM has a much better IDE based on features, but
MyEclipseIDE is closing the gap.

Interesting note: IBM is one of MyEclipseIDE's customers.. hmmmmmm :-)

HTH,
Aaron Bartell

Subject: WDSCi versus Eclipse + MyEclipse

Internally, our team has been using WDSCi 5.1.2. We have had several
issues with the IDE including:

a) Performance
b) WebSphere Test Environment (WTE) performance taking up to 10
minutes to start the server
c) Hot code replace with WTE
d) Crashes
e) JDK currency

We have not been able to remedy the situation. A colleague recommend trying
Eclipse with the MYECLIPSE plug in. We have done some initial
Testing and have been pleased and impressed with just base Eclipse 3.0.
Before we switch over in mass, I would like to get others experience in this
area.

1. Has anyone done any comparisons between WDSC (WebSphere Studio)
versus
Eclipse 3.0 with the MYECLIPSE plugin?
2. Have others "struggled" with WDSCi 5.1 and 5.1.2?

Thanks, Paul
