Thank you all sooooooooooooooooooo much.  With a little shove (smack, push 

whatever lol) in the right direction from all here I finally have it 
working.  It selects a record based on the date, sends back the 
selectedindex to the servlet which loads the correct record and reloads 
the screen, which also remembers which tab you were on when you changed 
it.  Thanks again, this list is sooo helpful.  Hopefully, in the future 
I'll be able to return the favor.
