Ron,

It sounds like you might find it interesting to look at design
patterns. One group of design patterns address different structures you
can use to build applications. Patterns like composite, flyweight and
proxy. Design patterns can help you understand the consequences of your
choice. There are lots of tools like Hibernate, JaxB, or iBatis built
around various design patterns that can build the types of relationships
you describe from data that is stored in database tables or XML
documents etc.
