String[] values = new String[8] fixed the problem.
I also checked Sal's suggestion. The file CCSID is 37.
Well, this is a problem. It creates an array with zero entries. When you try to assign something to the first entry (values[0] = xxx), there is no place to put the data. However, you should be getting an array index error, not a null pointer exception, so I'm still a bit confused.
