Plus, I'm comparing an i5 595 in late 2003 to a model 840 iSeries in mid-2000, so you can expect any number of hardware and software enhancements that helped the numbers. But the results are clear. The number for a 24-way 840-2420 running AS/400 JDK 1.3.0 was 79316 (and that was actually a little SLOWER than the 80348 figure for JDK 1.2.2 on the same machine), while the number for a 32-core (16 CPU) i5 595 on IBM JDK 1.4.2 was 880263, about 11 times faster.
