Thanks for the info. We're having Qshell interpreter installed in our AS400 
machine now.

Can everything be done from here (the QShell)? Creation of JAVA files and 
editing them as well? I did a search on Google and most sites seem to suggest 
ftp-ing the java files from a different system and then compiling them on the 
as400. This seems like a hassle and I'd rather do it straight from AS400 (even 
though I don't know the system so well).

You need to run it from Qshell if you are going to use javac.  Go to the
command line and type STRQSH.  You will now be in a unix/linux style
prompt.  Change your directory using CD /myjavadir/ and then try
compiling your program again.
