As to RPG evolving to meet your company's needs, exactly what needs are
RPG not meeting? To me, your particular needs are to make RPG into an
object oriented languages with namespaces and procedure overloading, and
I don't think the fact that RPG isn't going to support namespaces means
it's a dead language.

You have paid good attention to what I have said in the past :-) In
this case I would say that I want to see more of a library of API's
offered up by IBM themselves, meaning I am not looking for enhancements
to the RPG language but more of a IBM approved code repository. Right
now the RPG community relies of the volunteer work of others to provide
the needed libraries to make RPG viable in many of the ways we are being
challenged as programmers.

I wouldn't be asking for this from IBM if they hadn't first provided
quite the set of libraries for Java on their alphaworks site and in many
other forms.

Now, if they stuck 10 more people on the compiler team to give it some
more built in features I wouldn't argue with that:-) Maybe they could
even add back in %Move for you;-) ILE has done wonders for RPG, but it
would be great if a lot of the things RPG coders make use of on a daily
basis didn't have to come from interfacing with C API's.

Thanks for your input, Aaron! What exactly do you expect to see in
Alphaworks for RPG? What would you like to see?

As to RPG evolving to meet your company's needs, exactly what needs are
RPG not meeting? To me, your particular needs are to make RPG into an
object oriented languages with namespaces and procedure overloading, and

Me, I'm thrilled with the great amount that's been added in the last
five years or so. In some ways, I think RPG has outpaced Java in
expanding its basic syntax. Heck, I find it hard to believe that we had
to wait until Tiger to get generics.

Anyway, tell me what you need, Aaron, and I'll pass it on.

Joe
