Joe, Is data conversion a java issue ? As you are one of the super-defenders of the as400, isn't the AS400 one of the few systems that can create unicode DB-files ? Indeed data conversion does take extra cycles, as it does for p.e. date-fields (ever tried to convert a file with 10 date-fields to pure numeric data? => performance gain of a factor ... ), but most people will use this date-fields in their system for 'ease of use'. (PS: we don't, due to this performance degradation) For real comparisons in your tests: do a read/update on a simple file in RPG. then do the same on a 13488 CCSID file, also in RPG . then ...
