Joe, One problem is that the AS/400 specific things like connection pooling are very difficult to go on your own without Websphere, which was one of Ivan's requirements. I spent about a week going the J2ee route and configuring pooling on the iSeries. I was unhappy with the complexity overhead, and it was difficult to monitor and test. This is likely much easier with WebSphere as your but in my opinion pooling is so basic it shouldn't take JNDI, dozens of classes, and hundreds of lines of code to do what something like proxool does so elegantly in two lines of code.
