Viewing word and xls document through Websphere 3.5.6

Greetings,

We have a web application running under Websphere 3.5.6 that allows a user
to upload image files (actually any file) to the IFS.  We then present a
thumbnail of the image in a JSP and allow users to click on the image to
view the full image.  This works OK.  The question is when we allow users to
upload MS Word or Excel documents, and reference these using an A href on
the JSP,  the document appears in the browser but displaying all of the
literal word and excel commands embedded in the document.  Is there some set
up in Websphere that allows it to interpert MS Word or Excel metadata?  How
do you embed a link into a JSP to allow users to view Word or Excel
documents?
