Adele,

If you have V5R1 or V5R2, you can order the WebSphere Development
Studio Client (WDSc) from IBM (or from the VAR that sold your company
the iSeries) for free.

If you are working with V4R5 or before, you are still not out of luck.
Go to www.eclipse.org and download Eclipse, which is similar to the
WebSphere Development Studio Client, except it does not have the
iSeries-specific plug-ins.

I assume you already know Java. If not, you should learn this first,
to get away from the RPG "ghetto" that many iSeries programmers get
stuck in. I recommend you go to Bruce Eckel's web site,
www.mindview.net , and get his Hands-On Java Seminar on CD, the best
intro to Java I have seen. You can use and run all his examples in
Eclipse (or WDSc. There are several books published now to help you
with Eclipse also. Here is some information about one by Joe Pluta, but
there are others: http://mc-store.com/5059.html

Once you know Java pretty well, study for the certification exam that
Sun gives. It is hard, but I passed it in April the first time I took
it.

There are many other things you can do for free using your AS/400 or
iSeries. Go to jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/index.html and download
Tomcat. You can run Tomcat on your own PC, and even install it on your
iSeries. To help you install it on iSeries, go to the excellent article
by David Morris at
http://www.midrangeserver.com/mpo/mpo021402-story02.htm
With Tomcat you can run servlets and JSPs; you don't need WebSphere to
do that.

Finally, do not become discouraged I, too, work at an organization
totally uninterested in WebSphere development. All they want are an
endless stream of 1980s-style reports. But I have done all the things
mentioned above, and others too, and I am confident that soon I will be
able to find a job where WebSphere is used and appreciated. The economy
in the US is picking up now, and it will only be a matter of time.

If you live in France (as I guess from your e-mail address), you may be
in a good position now that workers in any EU country can work in any
other EU country. You know English so that will be anadvantage as well.
Do not be afraid to move out of a company that is giving you no
opportunity to improve your skills.

Good luck!

Thanks Mark,
but as I told, my company is not interested in Ws development and I
cannot download anything on our as/400. Therefore I would like to
implement and run the whole thing on pc platform (server, development
tool, etc) without any as/400 connection.
Adele.

Subject: Getting started with WebSphere

My primary job is only concerned with rpg and my company is not
interested
with new tecnologies, but I would like to start learning something with

WebSphere - for my own at home - (platform Windows XP).
I've seen there there are many downloadables for trial, redbooks,
articles
but I'm a little confused.
Does someone can give me a suggestion on where I can start start from
?
Thanks.
Adele.
