Hi Pete,

you don't need to buy anything to start. There is a lot of free stuff for 
nearly all you need.
Visual Age is outdated for more than 2 years and you should not use this 
anymore.
For development there is Eclipse and NetBeans for free, but for a starting 
point JCreator would do too and you install and learn this tool in less than 
4 hours.
>From the sun webpage you can get free tutorials, maybe Bruce Eckels Thinking 
in java might be nice to learn.
Only thing you need to access the as400 is the jdbc driver for the database 
access and its free too; just search the web for the downlod of jtOpen or 
jt400.
