The primary problem with web services is that everybody has to agree on what the format of the message is. It's exactly the same issue we went through with EDI. EDI has been around in one form or another for over 20 years, and is it even standardized today? Most EDI programmers would give you an earful about exactly how "standardized" the EDI standard is (there are currently over 300 EDI standards and guidelines). So while the concept of web services is all well and good, until a consortium of major players gets together to devise a standard international message format and a directory of those standards, it's all moot.
