Thanks to everybody who managed to nudge me in the right directions. Finally, I managed to get the simpler of our two JavaMail applications working (explicitly calling "setDebug(false)" did it), and turned my attention to the other one. For some reason, it blows up in one of my classes unless I add several diagnostics, in which case it works perfectly -- except that I had to do some digging before I found where the SOCKS-related properties were being set (in a CL program that acts as a CPP to launch the Java program). I've managed to get everything working. Even though I haven't a clue why I had to do some of I did. Thanks, guys. -- James H. H.
